CLONING

One controversial discovery in modern science is that of cloning. Though we have yet to clone human beings, we have already cloned animals and plants. For instance, we have cloned a sheep by a process called " somatic cell nuclear transfer" or SCNT. This is a process by which genetic material is transferred from the nucleus of an adult donor cell to an egg whose nucleus has been removed.

Though we have already cloned animals and plants, there are many people who oppose experimenting on human beings. Discuss your opinions on the issue.

I think the person being cloned should be the one to say yes or no. I personally would say no because it would be weird having another me around. Also, just because they look like you, it doesn't mean they are you. They might have different personalities or different interest.

I agree with you, but that doesn't matter really, because scientist have decided not to try to clone a human, because we would probably cause that cloned "human" problems. Dolly, the sheep that has beened cloned, suffered issues, and died early. If we cloned a human, it is possible that the human would die early and painfully. Also, to get even deeper, it might be different cloning a human compared to cloning a sheep, because we a have a different amount of genes than a sheep does, so things could become...I would say...haywire.

I believe cloning is ethically wrong. I am amazed that our technology is so advanced, but I fell that no one should mess around and "play God." Like Kalvin pointed out, "Dolly" died PAINFULLY! Why take the chance of causing problems?

i think that cloning humans, even if we have the technology should be against the law.It would cause too many problems. First of all, the police could be locking for a criminal and catch the clone instead. To have two of the same person around would also just be confusing. Also if the sheep died, then humans would probably die too. Also is there anyway cloning yourself could really help you?

Cloning to me seems really stupid. Theres only one you, only one soul. So why even try cloning yourself if its just going to end up being an empty shell? I'm not saying another soul wouldn't take the shell, but it would be weird to have another you with a differant soul. :/ Its like you would get a twin that was never supposed to exist.

I agree with Kalvin and Alyssa. I believe that cloning is wrong, and that we are our own person for a reason and scientists should not make another one just like you. I think its amazing that our technology today is so advanced that we are even able to do things like this. But even though we are able to clone animals or possibly humans it does not mean that we should do it.
Like the others said, Dolly died a painfull death, and i dont think we should chance this with humans. This would cause way to many problems, and many people would be upset with this idea. It would just cause problems that we dont need to have.
I believe that everything happens for a reason, and if you were not supposed to have a twin, then i dont think you should be able to clone yourself to get one.

well im going to have to say i disagree. i think that if we have the technology to do amazing things such as cloning humans why not. Its just another amazing invention that we as americans should be fortunate of. Did anyone stop bill gates from making the internet??? no. even though today there are those who have become addicted to it and have had miserable lives because of it. Just because it may have bad side effects doesnt mean we shouldnt do it. The car takes away a life almost every fifteen minutes. but we still have it right. We could use this machine to bring back loved ones. Imagine losing a parent but using the Their DNA to make exactly another one of them. Wouldn't that be incredible!!!! Well just my thoughts, later

Me again....

I understand the "bringing back" loved ones concept, but you are only bringing a body back. It wouldn't have a memory of past times or feelings for whoever. It would only be a replica of a dead loved one. How much painful could that be?

Ok, so most of the people who have posted comments on this blog have disagreed to cloning humans, I would not like to counter their choice, but the reasons they disagree.
For instance "neko_chan" said something about "souls" and an "empty shell"? Also, Alyssa Eaton said that we shouldn't "play god".
I believe that those reasons are (and I'm being completely bias) not credible, mostly because they include faith and religion. Science should never be related to a religion. Same with government. For example, look what happened to the Quaker's government.
Now, for my opinion on the topic, If a human is willing to clone himself for the good of the nation, like a bigger number of soldiers in the army, or if humans can no longer produce babies (and by this I mean the term "shooting blanks") then I believe it is absolutely necessary. Other than more drastic reasons, I agree with the other students who opposed the idea. (not including those that relate faith to science).

It's me again.

I just wanted to point out that cloning a human, animal, or whatever creates a being that has the same genes as the donor. It starts off a new life as a baby, because of the process cloning is thus put forth. Try looking up more information before you give your opinion next time.

I honestly think that cloning would screw up the way humans have been living for millions of years. What's the point of being able to reproduce, like everything else, just to go and make artificial versions of ourselves?
(P.S. If my thinking is wrong, since I honestly didn't do much research for this topic, please don't chew me out for it. haha, I see the way you feisty people are arguing. ;D)

I agree with Alyssa I believe cloning anything is morally and ethically wrong. Each one of us is unique in our own way! Life is special and we should cherish it while we have it. We should not take it for granted, then use a machine to bring it back again. I also believe we will not get the technology to make cloning work, thank goodness!

Alyssa Eaton said...

Okay Nick Lapuz....

here to clarify

Yes, my religion is a part of this. But, a huge part of what religion you choose to believe is based on your morals. So, it is not just my beliefs in whatever God or anything alone, but also how I feel MORALLY. Just because I reference God does not mean that religion shouldn't play a part in science.

I have a question: If you clone a human will it think the same as the real thing? I believe that if you clone a human it will only look the same. It will only be the exact same person if the clone has the same experiences as the original person.

Lauren Newton said...

I don't think a human should ever be cloned. So far, the animals that have been cloned have had health issues and died at an early age. What does that accomplish? Especially if we start cloning humans. The side-effects will most likely be worse, and deadlier. And why do the scientists want people and animals cloned? It won't help anyone, or anything. But even when they think they have made cloning perfect, with no side-effects they still should never do it.It is ethically wrong and there is no point, and (as many others on here have said) the new cloned person will never be the same as the original. Cloning is only going to hurt the cloned people and animals.

People, you should actually read the comments on this page, don't just post for extra credit. Some of these things say stuff. A lot of people say things even though they have been explained in the previous comment. And, when you clone, as i have said before, they are not the same thing. Just a shell of the same thing. And when something is cloned, it will not be an adult right away. It will start out as a baby, and grow as a normal human.

Kalvin Kirkwood said...

Me again. Ok, I think people are getting confused with the concept of cloning. When you clone someone, they are not going to be the real thing. No where near. They will be a completely new person, but will just look the same and the person they were originally cloned from. The clone will not have any memories of the original person. They might have the same characteristics and looks, but they will not have the same memories or emotions as the original.
bballplayer101 said that we could use cloning to bring back a dead loved one, but by cloning them, you are not bringing them back. All you would be doing is making a person that looks like your dead loved one. Even if it was the same exact person when you cloned them, it doesn't matter. Scientist have agreed to never put a person in misery by cloning them. They have agreed to never clone a human.
